The Phils (3-4, 3rd) will continue their weekend series with the Mets (5-2, 2nd) as they will play an afternoon game later this afternoon, a game that will be televised nationally by Fox Sports. The game will be played at Citizens Bank Park and is to start at 4:05 pm EDT.
The Phils will be out to even the series with the Mets after losing the opening game last night as the Mets got to their number two starter, Cliff Lee, in the first inning via three extra-bases hits, including a two-run home run by Jason Bay, before giving up a total of four runs to a team that he had been able to control in three previous starts. Meanwhile, the Phils would end up outhitting the Mets 11 hits to 6, but would only be able to score one run against Mets’ starter R.A. Dickey, a home run by Freddy Galvis, his first career home run, as they were not able to get the much needed key hit so that they could get back into the ballgame, as Dickey and his knuckleball found ways to frustrate several Phils’ rallies.
In the second game of the weekend series, the Phils will send to the mound their second-year starter Vance Worley (0-0, 1.50), who had received a no-decision in his opening start against the Pirates on April 8, as he went six innings, giving up just a run on five hits and a walk, while striking out five, in the Phils’ 5-4 ninth-inning lost. Career-wise, Worley has a 3-1 record against the Mets with a 3.00 ERA, while striking out 23 Mets. He will be out to even up the series for the Phils as he look for his first win of 2012. The Mets plan to counter with Jon Niese (1-0, 4.50) who is coming off a win against the Braves on April 8, as he pitched six innings, giving up four runs, three of which were earned, on two hits and four walks, while he struck out seven, in the Mets’ 7-5 win, as they completed their sweep of the Braves. Niese has a career record of 3-4 against the Phils, with a 4.07 ERA, while he struck out 48 Phils. He will be trying to give the Mets the series victory, hoping that Dickey’s knuckleball will have messed up the Phils’ batters timing.
