The Marlins tried to score first in the bottom of the second as they loaded up the bases on a lead-off single by Marcell Ozuna, a walk by Justin Ruggiano, moving Ozuna up to second base, and Chris Coghlan being hit by the pitch, with nobody out. Phils’ starter Cliff Lee then got himself of the jam by first getting Nick Green to hit into a 5-2-3 doubleplay, with Erik Kratz touching home plate, forcing out Ozuna, for the inning’s first out, as Ruggiano moved up to third base, while Coghlan stopped at second base, before he ended the inning by getting Jeff Mathis to pop up to the second baseman Freddy Galvis. The Phils took the lead in the fourth as, with two men out, Delmon Young hits a solo home run, his third home run of the season, and his second in two straight games. The Phils then increased their lead in the top of the sixth as, with one man on, and with two men out, Dom Brown hits an RBI triple, as he just missed hitting a home run, knocking in D. Young, who had just singled, giving the Phils a 2-0 lead. The Phils then made it a 3-0 lead as Galvis hits an RBI single, scoring Brown. That would be the final score as Lee would end up throwing a complete shutout, as he gave up only two more hits to the Marlins, a lead-off single to Miguel Olivo in the bottom of the sixth, and a two-out infield single by Derek Dietrich in the bottom of the ninth, before he ended the game by getting Ozuna to fly out to right field for the game’s final out.
Cliff Lee (5-2, 2.48) got the win as he threw a complete game, three-hit shutout, as he also gave up two walks, while striking out five. Kevin Slowey (1-5, 3.30) took the lost as he pitched five innings, giving up a run on six hits, while he struck out six. Wade LeBlanc pitched one and two-thirds innings, giving up two runs on five hits and a walk, while striking out two. Chad Qualls pitched an inning and a third, striking out a batter. Steve Cishek pitched a scoreless inning, giving up a hit.
The Phils had twelve hits in the game, with Jimmy Rollins (Singles), Ryan Howard (Single, Double), Delmon Young (Single, Home Run, RBI) and Cliff Lee (Singles) all leading the ballclub with two hits each. Ben Revere, Dom Brown (Triple, RBI), Freddy Galvis (RBI) and Erik Kratz had the other four Phils’ hits, all singles. The Phils also had a walk (Kratz) and a stolen base (Galvis (1)) in the game.
The Phils (23-24, 3rd) have the day off today.
