The Phils even the series as they blank the Padres, winning 3-0.

Philadelphia_PhilliesThe Phils win their first home game as they blank the Padres, 3-0.

The Phils break up a pitchers’ duel by taking the lead in the bottom of the sixth as, with a man on second, and with two men out, Odubel Herrera hits an RBI triple, knocking in Tyler Goeddel, who had started the inning off with a single, then moved up to second base on Padres’ pitcher Robbie Erlin’s wild pitch, giving the Phils a 1-0 lead. The Phils added to their lead in the bottom of the eighth as, with the bases loaded, via a lead-off walk by pinch-hitter Cedric Hunter, a walk by pitch-hitter Emmanuel Burris, moving Hunter up to second base and a walk to Herrera, moving both runners up a base, and with one man out, Maikel Franko hits into an RBI force out, 6-4, scoring Hunter, giving the Phils a 2-0 lead, before Burris comes home on second baseman Cory Spangenberg’s throwing error to first base, allowing Franco to reach base, and giving the Phils a 3-0 lead. The Padres then challenged the play, claiming that Herrera should’ve been called out for his slide under the new slide rule, which was rejected by the umpires, who upheld the call, allowing the two runs to score. That would end up being the final score as Jeanmar Gomez picked up his third save of the season by pitching a scoreless ninth, getting Alexi Amarista to ground out, 4-3, for the game’s final out.

Charlie Morton (1-1, 5.23) got the win as he pitched six and two-thirds shutout innings, giving up just three hits and four walks, while striking out seven. Hector Neris received his first hold of the season as he pitched a third of an inning, striking out the only batter that he would face. David Hernandez also collected his first hold of the season as he pitched a scoreless inning, giving up a walk, while striking out a batter. Jeanmar Gomez received his third save of the year as he threw a scoreless inning, giving up a hit. Robbie Erlin (1-1, 0.93) took the lost as he went six innings, giving up a run, on three hits, a wild pitch and two walks, while striking out seven. Ryan Buchter pitched a 1-2-3 inning. Kevin Quackenbush pitched a third of an inning, giving up two runs on no hits and two walks. Brad Hand pitched two-thirds of an inning, giving up a hit and a walk.

The Phils had only four hits in the game, an RBI triple by Odubel Herrera, a single by Ryan Howard, a single by Freddy Galvis and a single by Tyler Goeddel. The Phils also had five walks (Herrera (2), Carlos Ruiz, pinch-hitter Cedric Hunter, pinch-hitter Emmanuel Burris) in the game, while the defense threw out a base runner, performed two double plays and committed an error (Howard).

The Phils (3-5, T-3 NL East) will continue their four-game series with the Padres (3-5, T-4 NL West) with a night game tonight. The game will be played at Citizens Bank Park and is to start at 7:05 pm EDT. The Phils will send to the mound Jerad Eickhoff (0-1, 3.60), who is coming off a lost against the Mets on April 8, as he pitched five innings, giving up three runs, two of which were earned, on five hits and two walks, while striking out three, in the Phils’ 7-2 lost. He will be trying to even up his record, while trying to give the Phils the lead in the series. The Padres will counter with Colin Rea (0-0, 12.46), who is coming off a bad start against the Rockies on April 8, as he pitched three and a third innings, giving up five runs on six hits and four walks, while striking out five in the Padres’ 13-6 win. He will be trying for his first win of the season while trying to give the Padres the series’ lead. The Phils will be trying to take the series’ lead.
