Phils’ starter Jeremy Hellickson spends the first five innings in a pitchers’ duel with Nationals’ starter Gio Gonzalez, giving up only two hits, a second inning lead-off ground-rule double to Daniel Murphy and a one-out single to Murphy in the fifth, along with three walks, while striking out eight Nats. The Phils would finally break the tie in the top of the sixth as, with a man on third, and with one man out, Darin Ruf hits a sacrifice fly, knocking in Odubel Herrera, who had started the inning off with a single, moved up to second base on Freddy Galvis’ sacrifice bunt, 1-3, then went to third base on Gonzalez’ wild pitch, giving the Phils’ a 1-0 lead. The Phils added to their lead in the top of the seventh as, with runners on second and third, and with one man out, Peter Bourjos hits a fielder’s choice grounder to drawn-in third baseman Anthony Rendon, who then committed a throwing error with a high throw to home plate, allowing Cesar Hernandez, who had started the inning off with a single, had moved up to second base on Tyler Goeddel’s single, then went to third base on Hellickson’s sacrifice bunt, 3-4, to safely cross home plate, giving the Phils a 2-0 lead, while sending Goeddel, who had earlier singled, then moved up to second base on Hellickson’s sacrifice bunt, to move up to third base on the grounder, while Bourjos would be safe at first on the play. The Phils then took a 3-0 lead in the top of the eighth as, with two men out, Carlos Ruiz hits a solo home run, his third home run of the season. That would end up being the final score as Jeanmar Gomez would collect his sixth save of the year by pitching a 1-2-3 ninth, striking out Ryan Zimmerman, looking, for the game’s final out.

Jeremy Hellickson (2-1, 3.81) took the win as he pitched seven strong innings, giving up only two hits and three walks, while striking out eight.
