The Phils win their first series on the road behind eight solid innings from Cole Hamels and a hot offense, as they defeat the D-backs, 7-2.

Eight strong innings from starter Cole Hamels and seven more runs by the offense leads the Phils to their first series win on the road as they beat the D-backs, 7-2.

The Phils took the lead in the first as, with one man on, and with two men out, Hunter Pence hits an RBI single, scoring Placido Polanco, who had earlier singled, then moved up to second base on catcher Henry Blanco’s passed ball, giving the Phils a 1-0 lead. The Phils tried to increase their lead later that inning as Pence tried to score on Laynce Nix’s double to left, but is gunned down at the plate by left fielder Jason Kubel, as Blanco applied the tag for the inning’s third out. They tried to increased their lead again in the second as, with a man on first, and with one man out, a wild pitch by Trevor Cahill got past Blanco and then went up the right field foul area, near the Phils’ dug out, allowing Carlos Ruiz, who had just singled, to go first to second base, and then to third base, before he headed for home plate since Cahill never went to cover home plate, but he is thrown out at the plate, 2-5, as third baseman Cody Ransom won the foot race to the plate, before applying the tag for the inning’s second out. The Phils finally added to their lead in the sixth as, with two men on, and with one man out, Juan Pierre, who had earlier singled, then moved up to second base on Polanco’s single, before going on to third on Shane Victorino’s ground out, 4-3, would score on Cahill’s second wild pitch of the ballgame, giving the Phils a 2-0 lead, while allowing Polanco, who had earlier singled, then stopped at second base on Victorino’s ground out, to move up to third base. The Phils then made it a 3-0 lead as Pence hits an RBI single, scoring Polanco. The Phils increased their lead three batters later as, with two men on, and with two men out, Ruiz hits an RBI single, knocking in Pence, who had stopped at second base on pinch hitter Ty Wigginton’s single, giving the Phils a 4-0 lead, while sending Wigginton, who had just singled, on to third. The Phils then took a 6-0 lead two batters later as, with the bases loaded, thanks to a walk to Freddy Galvis, moving Ruiz up to second base, and with still two men out, Cole Hamels helped his own cause by hitting a two-run single, knocking in both Wigginton and Ruiz, while sending Galvis over to third. The D-backs finally got on the scoreboard in the seventh as, with two men on, and with one man out, Kubel hits an RBI single, knocking in Aaron Hill, who had earlier singled, then stopped at second base on Justin Upton’s single, making it a 6-1 Phils’ lead, while sending Upton, who had just singled, up to second base. Two batters later, after Ransom had walked to load the bases, as both runners moved up a base, Upton would score on Paul Goldschmidt grounder, making it a 6-2 Phils’ lead, while second baseman Pete Orr would commit a force attempt, missed catch error, as he missed shortstop Galvis’ throw to second base, allowing Kubel to reach third and Ransom to be safe at second base, while Goldschmidt would be safe at first. The Phils then took a 7-2 lead in the ninth as, with a runner on first, and with nobody out, Polanco hits an RBI double, scoring Pierre, who had just singled. That would end up being the final score as Michael Schwimer, who had just been called up from the Lehigh Valley to replace Michael Stutes, who had just been placed on the disabled list last night, pitched a 1-2-3 ninth, getting Kubel to lined out to center for the game’s final out.

Cole Hamels (3-1, 2.73) got the win as he pitched eight strong innings, giving up two runs on four hits and a walk, while he struck out seven. Michael Schwimer threw a 1-2-3 ninth. Trevor Cahill (1-2, 3.70) took the lost as he went five and a third innings, giving up four runs on six hits, two walks, a passed ball and two wild pitches, while striking out three. Craig Breslow pitched two-thirds of an inning, giving up two runs on three hits and a walk, while striking out a batter. Brad Ziegler and David Hernandez combined for two scoreless innings, giving up two hits (one hit each) between them, while striking out four Phils (two apiece). Joe Martinez pitched an inning, giving up a run on two hits, as he struck out a batter.

The Phils had thirteen hits in the game, with Placido Polanco (2 Singles, Double, RBI) and Carlos Ruiz (Singles, RBI) both leading the team with three hits apiece, followed by Juan Pierre (Singles) and Hunter Pence (Singles, 2 RBIs) who both had two hits each. Laynce Nix (Double), pinch hitter Ty Wigginton (Single) and Cole Hamels (Single, 2 RBIs) had the other three Phils’ hits. The final Phil run would score on a wild pitch. The Phils also had three walks in the ballgame, as the Phils’ now hot offense have scored 20 runs in their last nineteen innings.

The Phils (9-10, 4th East) will have an off-day tomorrow before starting a four-game weekend series with the Cubs, starting on Friday night, in Philadelphia.

The Phils reach eighty victories, despite having to wait over two hours for the rain to subside first, as they defeat the D-backs, 4-1.

The Phils, after having to wait over two hours for the rain to leave, win their eightieth game, as they beat the D-backs, 4-1.

The Phils took the lead in the second as, with two men on, and with two me out, Wilson Valdez hits an RBI double, knocking in Raul Ibanez. who had earlier doubled, while sending Brian Schneider, who had just walked, on to third base, giving the Phils a 1-0 lead. The Phils then made it a 3-0 lead in the third as, with one man on, and with nobody out, John Mayberry, Jr. hits a two-run home run, his tenth home run of the season, knocking in Jimmy Rollins, who had earlier singled. After the end of the inning, the ground crew put the tarp onto the infield, just moments before it started to rain, at times coming down in buckets, delaying the game for over two hours before play finally resumed. The Phils then added to their lead in the fifth as, with one man on, and with two men out, Ibanez hits an RBI double, knocking in Chase Utley, who had earlier doubled, giving the Phils a 4-0 lead. The D-backs got on the board in the eighth as Paul Goldschmidt hits a solo home run, his fourth home run of the season, cutting the Phils’ lead down to 4-1. That would end up being the final score as Ryan Madson collected his twenty-third save of the year as he pitched a 1-2-3 ninth.

Vance Worley received a no-decision as he pitched three strong innings, before the two-hour plus rain delay, giving up just a hit, while striking out two. David Herndon (1-2, 3.79) got the win as he pitched three scoreless innings after the deluge, giving up a hit, while striking out four. Michael Stutes pitched an inning plus one batter, giving up a run on a hit and a walk, while striking out a batter. Antonio Bastardo collected his thirteenth hold of the year as he pitched a scoreless inning, striking out two. Ryan Madson received his twenty-third save of the year as he pitched a 1-2-3 inning, striking out a batter. Ian Kennedy (15-4, 3.22) took the lost as he also pitched only three innings, thanks to the long rain delay, giving up three runs on five hits and two walks, while striking out four. Micah Owings also pitched three innings after the rain had stopped, giving up a run on two hits and a walk, while he struck out four. Bryan Shaw, Joe Paterson and David Hernandez combined for two scoreless innings, giving up a walk (Shaw), while striking out a batter (Shaw) between them.

The Phils had seven hits in the ballgame, with both Chase Utley (Single, Double) and Raul Ibanez (Doubles, RBI) both leading the team with two hits apiece. Jimmy Rollins (Single), John Mayberry, Jr. (Home Run, 2 RBIs) and Wilson Valdez (Double, RBI), had the other three Phils’ hits. This would be the first game, since the trade, in which Hunter Pence would not get a hit, and the Phils would end up winning the game.

The Phils (80-42, 1st) will now begin a short three-game road trip with the Nats (59-63, 4th), starting tonight with a night game. The game will be played at Nationals Park and will start at 7:05 pm EDT. The Phils will send to the mound Roy Oswalt (5-7, 3.84), who is coming off a win against the Nats on August 13, as he pitched seven innings, giving up three runs on six hits and a walk, while he struck out five, in the Phils’ 11-3 rout. He will be going for his second straight win since coming off the DL. The Nats will counter with Livan Hernandez (7-11, 4.21), who is coming off a win against the Phils on August 12, as he went six and two-thirds innings, giving up an unearned run on four hits and a walk, while striking out three, in the Nats’ 4-2 win. He hopes to once again stifle the Phils’ offense. The Phils plan to increase their present winning streak at the Nats expense.

The Phils come up short as they lose once again to the D-backs, 7-5.

The Phils come up short as they lose their second straight game to the D-backs, 7-5.

The Phils took a 1-0 lead in the first as, with a runner on third, and with nobody out, Placido Polanco hits an RBI single, knocking in Shane Victorino, who had started the game off with a triple. The D-backs tied it up at one-all in the second as, with two men on, and with two men out, Gerardo Parra hits an RBI single, knocking in Miguel Montero, who had earlier singled, then went to second on Juan Miranda’s walk, while sending Miranda, who had just walked, to third base. The D-backs then took a 3-1 lead as Daniel Hudson hits a two-run double, knocking in both Miranda and Parra. The Phils got a run back in the third as, with two men on, and with one man out, Ryan Howard hits an RBI single, scoring Polanco, who had been safe on a force out, 6-unassisted, as Shane Victorino, who had just singled, was wiped out at second base, then went to second on Jimmy Rollins’ single, cutting the D-backs’ lead to 3-2, while sending Rollins, who had just singled, up to third base. The D-backs got the run back in their half of the third as, with a man on third, and with one man out, Stephen Drew hits an RBI single, knocking in Kelly Johnson, who had earlier singled, stole second base, then went to third on Justin Upton’s ground out, 5-3, giving the D-backs a 4-2 lead. The D-backs then made it a 5-2 lead as with Drew now on third base, after going to second on Montero’s ground out, 6-3, and then going to third on Roy Oswalt’s wild pitch, and with two men out, he would score on Ryan Roberts’ RBI single. The Phils then cut the lead to 5-3 D-backs in the sixth as, with two men on, and with two men out, pinch hitter Ross Gload hits an RBI single, scoring Ben Francisco, who had earlier singled, then reached second base on Pete Orr’s single. The D-backs got that run back in their half of the sixth as, with one man out, Roberts hits a solo home run, his fifth home run of the season, making it a 6-3 D-backs’ lead. The D-backs made it 7-3 in the seventh as, with man on, and with two men out, Uption hits an RBI single, scoring Johnson, who earlier had an infield single, thanks to David Herndon not covering first base on his grounder to Howard, stealing second base, then reaching third on Herndon’s wild pitch. The Phils then cut the D-backs’ lead to 7-5 in the ninth as, with one man on, and with two men out, Francisco hits a two-run home run, his fourth home run of the year, scoring Howard, who had just singled. But that would be it as David Hernandez ended the game by getting Raul Ibanez to fly out to right.

Roy Oswalt (3-1, 3.33) took the lost as he pitched only three innings, giving up five runs on six hits, a walk, and a wild pitch. Kyle Kendrick followed with two 1-2-3 innings. Mike Zagurski then pitched an inning, giving up a run on one hit, as he struck out a batter. David Herndon pitched two innings, giving up a run on two hits, a wild pitch and a walk. Daniel Hudson (1-4, 5.64) got the win as he pitch six innings, giving up three runs on ten hits, while he struck out six. Sam Demel recieved his second hold of the season as he pitched two-third of an inning, walking two batters, while striking out one. Joe Paterson pitched to one batter, walking him. Esmerling Vasquez collected his second hold of the year as he pitched a scoreless inning and a third, striking out a batter. David Hernandez pitched an inning, giving up two runs on two hits, as he struck out one. Oswalt was taken out of the game early when it was seen that he just did not have his best stuff.

The Phils had twelve hits in the game, with Ryan Howard leading the way with three hits, two singles and a double, knocking in a run. Shane Victorino (Triple, Single), Jimmy Rollins (Singles), Ben Francisco (Single, Home Run, 2 RBIs), all followed with two hits each. Placido Polanco (Single, RBI), Pete Orr (Single) and pinch hitter Ross Gload (Single, RBI), had the other three Phils’ hits. The offense had their first ten+ hits game in a while, but they were unable to get the big hit when they needed it, spoiling a lot of scoring opportunities, with Francisco and Raul Ibanez being the main culprits.

The Phils (15-8, 2nd East) will conclude their series with the D-backs (10-12, 4th West) with an afternoon game at Chase Field. The game will start at 3:40 pm EDT (12:40 pm PDT). The Phils will send to the mound Cole Hamels (2-1, 2.92), who is coming off a win against the Padres on April 22, as he pitched eight shut out innings, giving up only four hits and three walks, while striking out eight, in the Phils’ 2-0 win. He will be trying to avoid the sweep, while hoping that last night’s game was an indication that the offense was waking up. The D-backs will counter with Joe Saunders (0-2, 4.98), who is coming off a no-decision against the Mets on April 22, as he pitched six innings, giving up a run on two hits and three walks, while striking out four, in the D-backs’ 4-1 lost. He is still loking for his first win of the year. The Phils hope to leave Phoenix with a win, while hoping that last night’s game will be a start of an offensive eruption.
