The Phils took the lead in their half of the first as, with one man on, and with two men out, Ryan Howard hits a two-run home run, his fourteenth home run of the season, knocking in Jimmy Rollins, who had earlier singled, giving the Phils a 2-1 lead. The Phils then made it a 4-1 lead in the third as, with one man on, and with two men out, Chase Utley hits a two-run home run, his third home run of the season, scoring Shane Victorino, who had just singled. The Phils added to their lead in the fourth as, with one man out, Dom Brown hits a solo blast, his third home run of the year, giving the Phils a 5-1 lead. The Phils took a 6-1 lead in the fifth as, with the bases loaded, via a single by Victorino, a double by Utley, with Victorino stopping at third base, and an intentional walk to Howard, and with one man out, Placido Polanco hits a sacrifice fly, scoring Victorino, who beat the throw to the plate, while sending Utley to third. The Phils then made it an 8-1 lead in the sixth as, with one man on, and with two men out, Jimmy Rollins hits a two-run shot of his own, his fifth home run of the year, knocking in Carlos Ruiz, who had earlier singled. The Phils then made it a 9-1 lead in the seventh as, with two men on, Brown hits a solo bomb into the right field seats, his fourth home run of the season, and his second home run of the night. That would be the final score as David Herndon threw two scoreless innings, after taking over for winning pitcher Cole Hamels, who’s back had tighten up on him after he had given up a lead-off walk to Wes Helms in the eighth.

Cole Hamels (9-2, 2.49) got the win as he pitched seven and one plus strong innings, giving up just one run on three hits and one walk, while striking out six. David Herndon pitched two scoreless innings, giving up three hits, while striking out two. Chris Volstad (2-7, 6.07) took the lost as he went five and two-thirds innings, getting hammered for eight runs on ten hits and two walks, while striking out two. Edward Mujica pitched one and one-third innings, giving up a run on a hit and a walk. Steve Cishek pitched a 1-2-3 inning, striking out a batter.

The Phils had eleven hits in the game, with Shane Victorino leading the team with three hits, two singles and a double, as he raised his batting average to .288. Jimmy Rollins (Single, Home Run, 2 RBIs), Chase Utley (Double, Home Run, 2 RBIs) and Dom Brown (2 Home Runs, 2 RBIs), all followed him with two hits each. Ryan Howard (Home Run, 2 RBIs) and Carlos Ruiz (Single), had the other two Phils’ hits, while Placido Polanco knocked in the other Phil run with a sac fly, as the offense tore up Marlins’ starter Chris Volstad.

The Phils (41-26, 1st) continue their series with the Marlins (32-34, 4th) with the day half of a day-night doubleheader, which is already in progress.
