Adam Morgan wins his first start as the Phils hang on to defeat the Braves, winning 3-2.
The Phils give Adam Morgan his first win of the season as they start their three-game series with the Braves with a win as they defeat Atlanta, 3-2.
The Phils took the lead in the top of the fourth as, with runners on the corners, and with one man out, Freddy Galvis hits a sacrifice fly, knocking in Maikel Franco, who had started the inning off with a single, then stopped at third base on Carlos Ruiz’s single, giving the Phils a 1-0 lead. The Braves tied the game up at one-all in their half of the fourth as, with runners on the corners, and with nobody out, Tyler Flowers hits into a 6-4-3 doubleplay, knocking in Ender Inciarte, who had started the inning off with a single, then stopped at third base on Freddie Freeman’s single, while Freeman was thrown out at second base for the inning’s first out. The Phils regain the lead in the top of the fifth as, with a man on third, and with two men out, Cesar Hernandez hits an RBI single, knocking in Peter Bourjos, who had earlier doubled, then moved up to third base on Odubel Herrera’s fly out to right for the inning’s second out, giving the Phils a 2-1 lead. The Phils’ added to their lead in the top of the eighth as, with nobody out, Franco hits a lead-off home run, his seventh home run of the season, giving the Phils a 3-1 lead. The Braves would get a run back in the bottom of the ninth as, with nobody out, Freeman hits a lead-off home run, his fifth home run of the year, making it a 3-2 Phils’ lead. That would end up being the final score as Jeanmar Gomez would buckle down and collect his twelfth save of the season, getting pinch-hitter Reid Brignac to fly out to center for the game’s final out.
Adam Morgan (1-0, 3.94) got the win as he threw seven strong innings, giving up a run on four hits and a walk, while striking out four. Hector Neris collected his eighth hold of the season by pitching a scoreless inning, giving up a walk. Jeanmar Gomez received his twelfth save of the season as he pitched an inning, giving up a run on two hits. Matt Wisler (1-3, 3.27) took the loss as he pitched eight innings, giving up three runs on eight hits and two walks, while striking out two. Ian Krol pitched a scoreless inning, as he gave up a hit, while striking out a batter.
The Phils had nine hits in the game, with Maikel Franco leading the team with three hits, two singles and a home run, as he knocked in a run. Peter Bourjos followed with two hits, a single and a double. Odubel Herrera (Double), Cesar Hernandez (Single, RBI), Carlos Ruiz (Single) and Tyler Goeddel (Single) had the other four Phils’ hits, while Freddy Galvis (Sacrifice Fly) knocked in the final Phils’ run. The Phils’ offense also had two walks (Ruix, Galvis) in the game while the defense performed a double play.
The Phils (19-14, 3rd) continue their series with the Braves (7-24, 5th) with a night game tonight. The game is to start at 7:10 pm EDT and will be played at Turner Field. The Phils will send to the mound Jerad Eickhoff (1-4, 4.21), who is coming off a lost against the Cardinals on May 5, as he went six innings, giving up three runs on six hits and two walks, while striking out only two, in the Phils’ 4-0 lost. He will be trying for his second win of the season while trying to lead the Phils to a four-game winning streak. The Braves will counter with William Perez (0-0, 5.11), who is coming off a no-decision against the Dodgers on April 19, as he went only three and a third innings, giving up two hits and three walks, while striking out a batter, in the Braves’ 8-1 win. He is still looking for his first win of the season while trying to lead the Braves to tie up the series. The Phils will be trying to increase their present winning streak to four games.
