Phils win their opening spring training road game as they defeat the Yanks, 3-1.

The Phils took the lead in the top of the second as, with a man on third, and with two men out, Cord Phelps hits an RBI single, knocking in Darin Ruf, who had earlier doubled, then moved up to third base on Grady Sizemore’s ground out, 3-1, for the inning’s second out, giving the Phils a 1-0 lead. The Phils added to their lead in the top of the fifth as, with two men on, and with two men out, Maikel Franco hits an RBI single, knocking in Odubel Herrera, who had started the inning off with a single, then moved up to second base on Freddy Galvis’ sacrifice bunt, 1-3, giving the Phils a 2-0 lead, before Dom Brown, who had earlier walked, then went all the way to third on the hit, is gunned down at home plate, 8-1-2-5-2, trying to score after the errant throw to third base by center fielder Mason Williams, then being caught in a rather short run down before finally being tagged out by catcher Brian McCann for the inning’s final out. The Yanks got a run back in the bottom of the sixth as, with the bases loaded, via a lead-off double by Williams, a single by Cito Culver, sending Williams up to third base, and a walk to Alex Rodriguez, moving Culver up to second base, with pinch runner Kyle Higashioka replacing Rodriguez at first base, and with nobody out, Gary Sanchez hits a sacrifice fly to right, knocking in Williams, making it a 2-1 Phils’ lead. The Phils got the run base in the top of the seventh as, with a man on third, and with two men out, Aaron Altherr hits an RBI single, knocking in Herrera, who had earlier singled, stole second base, then moved up to third base on Galvis’ ground out, 5-3, for the inning’s second out, giving the Phils a 3-1 lead. That would end up being the final score as Justin De Fratus collected his first save of the spring as he threw a scoreless ninth, striking out Nick Noonan, looking, for the game’s final out.

Kevin Slowey (1-0, 0.00) gets the win as he pitched two scoreless innings, giving up a hit, while striking out two. Paul Clemens followed with two scoreless innings, as he gave up a walk. Ethan Martin pitched two innings, giving up a run on two hits and a walk. Hector Neris pitched two 1-2-3 innings, striking out two. Justin De Fratus received his first save of the spring as he pitched a scoreless ninth, giving up two hits, while striking out a batter. Nathan Eovaldi (0-1, 4.50) took the lost as he threw two innings, giving up a run on two hits, while striking out a batter. Andrew Miller pitched a scoreless inning, giving up a hit, while striking out two. Kyle Davies pitched two innings, giving up a run on three hits, a walk and a hit batter. Danny Burawa pitched a 1-2-3 inning, striking out a batter. James Pazos pitched an inning, giving up a run on two hits, while striking out a batter. Wilking Rodriguez and Tyler Webb combined for two 1-2-3 innings, striking out a batter each.

The Phils had eight hits in the game, with Odubel Herrera leading the club with three hits, all singles, followed by Cord Phelps (RBI) with two hits, both singles. Maikel Franco (Single, RBI), Darin Ruff (Double) and Aaron Altherr (Single, RBI), had the other three Phils’ hits. The Phils’ offense also had a walk (Dom Brown), a hit batter (Gary Sizemore), three stolen bases (Herrera) and a sacrifice bunt (Freddy Galvis) in the game. The defense performed two double plays.

The next Phils’ (1-0-1) Grapefruit League game will be played tomorrow afternoon against the Houston Astros (0-0) at Osceola County Stadium in Osceola, Florida. The game is to start at 1:05 pm EST. The Phils will send to the mound Cliff Lee, who will be making his first start since his season ending operation. The Astros will counter with Collin McHugh. The Phils will be going for their second straight victory on the road.

The Phillies start their 2015 spring training season with a 5-5 tie with the visiting Yankees.

The Yanks took the lead in the top of the first as, with two men on, and with two men out, Jose Pirela hits an RBI single, knocking in Chris Young, who had earlier singled, then moved up to third base on Garrett Jones’ single to right on a ball that was deflected by first baseman Ryan Howard, giving the Bronx Bombers a 1-0 lead, while sending Jones, who had just singled, up to third base. The Phils tied the game up at one-all in the bottom of the fourth as, with two men on, and with nobody out, Howard redeemed himself with an RBI single, knocking in Freddy Galvis, who had started the inning off with a single, then moved up to second base on Grady Sizemore’s single. The Phils then took the lead three batters later, after Dom Brown had loaded up the bases with a single, moving up a base both Sizemore and Howard, and with one man out, as Cody Asche hits a sacrifice fly to left, scoring Sizemore, giving the Phils a 2-1 lead. The Phils then made it a 3-1 lead in the bottom of the fifth as, with a man on third, and with two men out, Cameron Rupp, who had started the inning off with a walk, moved up to second base on Ben Revere’s ground out, 3-unassisted, for the inning’s first out, them went to third base on Galvis’ ground out, 4-3, for the inning’s second out, scored on a balk by pitcher Diego Moreno, giving the Phils a 3-1 lead. The Phils added to their lead in the bottom of the seventh as, with a runner on second, and with one man out, Cesar Hernandez, who had started the inning off with a single, then stole second base as Koyje Hill strikes out for the inning’s first out, scores on a throwing error by Yanks’ second baseman Rob Refsnyder on a grounder by Odubel Herrera, giving the Phils a 4-1 lead, while Herrera would move up to second base on the errant throw. The Yanks would come back in the top of the ninth as, with a runner on third and with two men out, Jake Cave hits an RBI infield single, knocking in Mason Williams, who had started the inning off with a double, then moved up to third base on Cole Figueroa’s ground out, 6-3, making it a 5-2 Phils’ lead. The Yanks then tied the game up at five-all two batters later as, after Slade Heathcott hits a single, moving Cave up a base, with still two men out, Aaron Judge hits a three-run home run, his first home run of the spring, scoring both Cave and Heathcott. That would end up being the final score as the Phils ruined a two on, one out, opportunity in the bottom of the ninth.

David Buchanan pitched two innings for the Phils, giving up a run on five hits. Jerome Williams, Joely Rodriguez and Jeanmar Gomez followed with six scoreless innings between them, giving up three hits (Williams (1), Gomez (2)) and two walks (Rodriguez (1), Gomez (1)), while striking out three (one each). Mario Hollands pitched two-thirds of an inning, giving up four runs on five hits, while striking out one. Luis Garcia pitched a third of an inning, striking out the only batter that he would face. Adam Warren pitched two scoreless innings for the Yanks, giving up a hit. Luis Severino pitched an inning and a third, giving up two runs on four hits, while striking out two batters. Diego Moreno pitched an inning and two-thirds, giving up a run on a walk and a balk, while striking out a batter. Nick Goody pitched a 1-2-3 inning, striking out a batter. Jacob Lindgren pitched two-thirds of an inning, giving up two unearned runs on two hits, while striking out a batter. Branden Pinder pitched one and a third innings, striking out a batter. Chasen Shreve pitched a scoreless inning, giving up a hit and hitting a batter, while striking out two.

Kevin Slowey will be starting for the Phils while Nathan Eovaldi will start for the Yanks. The Phils will hopefully have a better result than the one they had this afternoon.

The Phils offense is once again shutout as they are three-hit by Pirates pitching as they lose, 3-0.

The Pirates broke up a 0-0 tie in the top of the sixth as, with a man on second, and with one man out, Russell Martin hits an RBI double, knocking in Andrew McCutchen, who had earlier been safe at first on a force out, 5-4, wiping out at second base Travis Snider, who had started the inning off with a walk, then moved up to second base on Phillippe Aumont’s wild pitch, giving the Pirates a 1-0 lead. The Pirates then made it a 2-0 lead as Neil Walker hit an RBI single, scoring Martin. The Pirates then added to their lead in the eighth as, with a man on third, and with two men out, Clint Barmes hits an RBI single, knocking in Gaby Sanchez, who had earlier doubled, then moved up to third base on Jordy Mercer’s ground out, 3-unassisted, giving the Pirates a 3-0 lead. That would end up being the final score as Ryan Beckman collected his first save of the spring as he threw a 1-2-3 ninth inning, getting Jimmy Rollins to fly out to right for the game’s final out.

Kyle Kendrick pitched five shutout innings, giving up three hits and two walks, while striking out two. Phillippe Aumont (0-3, 4.05) took the lost as he went a third of an inning, giving up two runs on a hit, a walk and a wild pitch. Antonio Bastardo pitched two-thirds of an inning, giving up two hits. B.J. Rosenberg pitched a scoreless inning, giving up two hits and a walk, while striking out a batter. Mario Hollands pitched a third of an inning, getting out the only man whom he would face. Jake Diekman pitched two-thirds of an inning, giving up a run on two hits and a walk, while striking out a batter. Jonathan Papelbon pitched a 1-2-3 inning, striking out the side. Charlie Morton and Jason Grilli combined for four shutout innings, giving up two hits (one hit each) between them, while striking out a batter (Morton). Tony Watson (2-0, 0.00) got the win as he pitched a 1-2-3 inning. Bryan Morris collected his fourth hold of the spring as he threw a 1-2-3 inning, striking out a batter. Jeanmar Gomez received his second hold of the spring as he threw a scoreless inning, giving up a hit, while striking out a batter. Jhonathan Ramos received his first hold of the spring, as he threw a 1-2-3 inning. Ryan Beckman collected his first save of the spring, as he threw a 1-2-3 ninth.

The Phils had only three hits in the game, all by Chase Utley, two doubles and a single. The Phils had no walks in the game while the defense committed an error (Cody Asche) in the game, along with an outfield assist (Dom Brown) and a pickoff (B.J. Rosenberg).

The Phils ended spring training on a sour note as tonight’s game was rained out. Their next game will be their season opener against the Texas Rangers at Globe Life Park in Arlington, Texas. The game is to start at 2:05 pm EDT (1:05 pm CDT). The Phils will send to the mound Cliff Lee (0-0,  -.–) while the Rangers will counter with Tanner Scheppers (0-0, -.–). The Phils will be trying to start the 2014 season on a good note, while planning to break out of their present hitting slump.

The Phils have announced that they have placed six of their players on the disabled list.

Philadelphia_PhilliesAs the Phils prepare to play their final two spring training games at Citizens Bank Park, they have announced that they plan to start the season with six of their players on the 15-day disabled list.

The six players are infielder Freddy Galvis with a left knee infection, outfielder/first baseman Darin Ruf out with a left oblique strain, left-handed starter Cole Hamels with left biceps tendinitis, right-handed starter Miguel Gonzalez with right shoulder tendinitis, right-handed reliever Mike Adams, who is recovering from right shoulder surgery and right-handed reliever Ethan Martin with right shoulder inflammation, with all but Adams being retroactive to March 21, as Adams goes back to March 26.

Adams has said that he hopes to join the team by April 15, while Hamels believes he should be ready by the end of April. Galvis, who is recovering from MRSA, hopes to be back by the middle of April. Ruf should be out for four to six weeks because of his injury, while Martin has started throwing. Ruben Amaro has mentioned that Gonzalez might be placed on the 60-day disabled list to give the team a bit of flexibility on the 40-man roster.

I just hope they guys will get back soon, so that they can all help the team.

The Blue Jays took the lead in the top of the fourth as, with a runner on third, and with one man out, Dioner Navarro hits a sacrifice fly, knocking in Emilio Guerrero, who was pinch running for Jose Bautista, who had started the inning off with a single, stole second base as Adam Lind struck out, swinging, then went to third on catcher Carlos Ruiz’s throwing error as he tried to throw Guerrero out, giving the Blue Jays a 1-0 lead. The Blue Jays added insurance runs in the top of the eighth as, with runners on second and third, and with one man out, Gabe Jacobo hits a two-run single, knocking in Josh Thole, who had started the inning off with a walk, moved up to second base on Guerrero’s single, then went to third base on Jonathan Diaz’s sacrifice bunt, 1-4, and Guerrero, who had earlier singled, then moved up to second base on Diaz’s sacrifice bunt, giving the Blue Jays a 3-0 lead, before moving up to second base on left fielder Leandro Castro’s throwing error to the plate. That would end up being the final score as Wil Browning collected the save as he ended a Phils’ threat as they loaded up the bases with Reid Brignac being hit by a pitch, before stealing second base, a walk to Edgar Duran, and a walk to Clete Thomas, and with two men out, as he struck out Koyie Hill, looking, for the game’s final out.

The Tigers take the lead in the top of the first as, with a runner on third, and with one man out, Miguel Cabrera hits an RBI ground out, 6-3, knocking in Ian Kinsler, who had just tripled, as the Tigers take a 1-0 lead. That would hold up as the final score as Cliff Lee and the Phils’ bullpen would only give up nine more hits and a walk in the game, while the Tigers’ pitching staff would keep the Phils’ offense grounded, giving up only two hits, both singles, and three walks in the game.

Cliff Lee (1-2, 2.55) took the lost as he pitched five innings, giving up a run on five hits and a walk, while striking out seven. Phillippe Aumont, Antonio Bastardo, B.J. Rosenberg and Jake Diekman would combine for four scoreless innings, giving up four hits (Aumont (1), Bastardo (1), Rosenberg (2)) between them, while striking out 4 (Aumont (1), Bastardo (1), Diekman (2)). The Phils will be trying to end their Grapefruit League season on a good note, before heading north for their final two spring training games at Citizens Bank Park with the Pirates.

The Phils took the lead in the top of the second as, with a runner on second, and with one man out, Bobby Abreu hits an RBI single, knocking in Carlos Ruiz, who had earlier reach base on third baseman Kelly Johnson’s fielding error, his second of the inning, before moving up to second base as Dom Brown, who had started the inning off by reaching base on third baseman Johnson’s first fielding error of the inning, is thrown out at third base as he tried to score on the error, 7-2, for the inning’s first out, giving the Phils a 1-0 lead. The Phils increased their lead in the top of the third as, with two men out, Ryan Howard hits a solo home run, his third home run of the spring, giving the Phils a 2-0 lead. The Phils then made it a 3-0 lead one batter later as Marlon Byrd follows with a solo home run of his own, his second home run of the spring. Vidal Nuno pitched an inning, giving up two runs on two hits. David Robertson and Matt Thorton combined for two scoreless innings, giving up a walk (Robertson) between them, while striking out one (Thorton). Shane Greene pitched an inning, giving up two runs on three hits. Shawn Kelley and David Herndon would combine for two scoreless innings, giving up a hit (Kelley) and two walks (Herndon) between them, while striking out a batter (Kelley). The Phils took the lead in the top of the second as, with the bases loaded, via singles by Ryan Howard and Dom Brown, with Howard stopping at second base, and a walk to John Mayberry, Jr., moving up both runners, and with nobody out, Cody Asche hits into a 3-6 force out, scoring Howard, giving the Phils a 1-0 lead, as Brown stops at second base, and Mayberry is wiped out at second base for the inning’s first out, as Asche ends up safe at first. The Phils then made it a 2-0 lead as Cameron Rupp follows with an RBI ground out, 5-3, knocking in Brown, while moving Asche up to second base. The Phils added to their lead in the top of the fourth as, with the bases loaded, via singles by Mayberry and Asche, with Mayberry stopping at second base, and a walk to Rupp, moving up both runners, and with one man out,  Tony Gwynn, Jr.  hits a sacrifice fly, scoring Mayberry, giving the Phils a 3-0 lead. The Phils then made it a 4-0 lead one batter later as, with two men on, and now with two men out, Ben Revere hits an RBI single, knocking in Asche, while sending Rupp up to second base. The Blue Jays get a run back in the bottom of the fifth as, with a runner on first, and with two men out, Colby Rasmus hits an RBI double, knocking in pinch runner Munenori Kawasaki, who was pinch running for Brett Lawrie, who had just singled, making it a 4-1 Phils’ lead. The Blue Jays then made it a 4-3 Phils lead as, with two men on, via a lead-off single by Gabe Jacobo, and a single by Josh Thole, moving Jacobo up to second base, and with nobody out, Brett Carroll hits a two-run double, knocking in both Jacobo and Thole, before being thrown out at third base, as he tried to stretch it into a triple, 8-6-5, for the inning’s first out. The Phils would get a run back in the top of the eighth as, with a man on second, and with one man out, Rupp hits an RBI double, knocking in Mayberry, who had started the inning off with a single, then moved up to second base on Reid Brignac’s ground out, 5-3, giving the Phils a 5-3 lead. Brandon Morrow (0-2, 9.00) took the lost a he pitched five innings, giving up four runs on five hits and three walks, while striking out four. Jeremy Jeffress and Casey Janssen  combined for two scoreless innings, giving up three hits (Jeffress (1), Janssen (2)) between them, while striking out a batter (Jeffress). Sergio Santos pitched to one batter, being unable to get him out, as he gave up a run on a hit. Tony Davis pitched a third of an inning, giving up a run on two hits.

The Phils had eleven hits in the game, with John Mayberry, Jr. (Singles) and Cody Asche (Singles, RBI), both leading the team with two hits each. The Phils took the lead in the top of the first as, with the bases loaded, via a lead-off single by Ben Revere, a walk by Freddy Galvis, moving Revere up to second base, a ground out by Chase Utley, 3-unassisted, moving both runners up a base, and a walk by Ryan Howard, and with two men out, Dom Brown hits a bases clearing triple, knocking in Revere, Galvis and Howard, giving the Phils a 3-0 lead. The Phils would add to their lead in the top of the second as, with a runner on third, and with two men out, Galvis hits an RBI triple, scoring Revere, who had just tripled, giving the Phils a 4-0 lead. The Orioles would get a run back in their half of the second as, with runners on second and third, and with nobody out, Ryan Flaherty hits a sacrifice fly to center, knocking in Chris Davis, who had started the inning off with a single, then stopped at third base on Nelson Cruz’s ground-rule double, making it a 4-1 Phils’ lead, while moving Cruz, who had earlier doubled, up to third base. The Phils would get that run back in the top of the fourth as, with men on second and third, and with nobody out, Maikel Franco hits an RBI single, knocking in Cameron Rupp, who had started the inning off with a single, then would stop at third base on Bobby Abreu’s double, giving the Phils a 5-1 lead, while sending Abreu, who had just doubled, on to third base. The Phils then took a 6-1 lead as Revere hits a sacrifice fly, knocking in Abreu. The Orioles would cut the Phils’ lead down in the bottom of the fifth as, with a man on first, and with nobody out, Nolan Reimold hits a two-run home run, his first home run of the spring, knocking in Steve Clevenger, who had started the inning off with a walk, making it a 6-3 Phils’ lead. The Orioles then made it a 6-5 Phils’ lead in the bottom of the ninth as, with a runner on first, and with two men out, Alex Gonzalez hits a two-run home run, his second home run of the spring, scoring Michael Almanzar, who had started the inning off with a walk. But that would end up being the final score as Cesar Jimenez recorded his first save of the spring by getting Xavier Paul to pop out to the second baseman for the game’s final out.

A.J. Burnett (1-2, 10.o0) got the win as he pitched four innings, plus two batters, giving up three runs on four hits and a walk, while striking out two. Shawn Camp pitched an inning, giving up a hit, while striking out a batter.  Phillippe Aumont collected his second hold of the spring as he threw a scoreless inning, giving up a walk. Kevin Munson received his first hold of the spring as he pitched a scoreless inning, giving up two hits, while striking out a batter. Cesar Jimenez collected his first save of the spring as he went two innings, giving up two runs on one hit and two walks. Ubaldo Jimenez (1-1, 9.00) took the lost as he went two innings, giving up four runs on four hits and three walks. Zach Britton pitched a 1-2-3 inning, striking out two batters. Eduardo Rodriguez threw two innings, giving up two runs on five hits, while striking out a batter. Darren O’Day, Steve Johnson and Kelvin De La Cruz combined for four scoreless innings, giving up three hits (one hit each) and four walks (O’Day (1), Johnson (1), De La Cruz (2), while striking out three (O’Day (1), De La Cruz (2)) between them.

The game stays a 0-0 tie until the bottom of the fifth as Dan Uggla hits a lead-off home run, his second home run of the spring, giving the Braves a 1-0 lead. The Braves would increase their lead in the bottom of the sixth as, with a runner on first, and with nobody out, Edward Salcedo hits a two-run home run, his first home run of the spring, knocking in Jason Heyward, who had started the inning off with a single, giving the Braves a 3-0 lead. The Braves would make it a 4-0 lead five batters later as, with two men on, and with two men out, Andrelton Simmons hits an RBI single, knocking in Jose Constanza, who had earlier singled, then stopped at second base on Uggla’s infield single, while sending pinch runner Philip Gosselin, who was pinch running for Uggla, up to second base. The Braves then made it a 6-0 lead as Jordan Schafer hits a two-run triple, knocking in Gosselin, and pinch runner Elmer Reyes, who was pinch running for Simmons. The Phils would get a run back in the top of the seventh as, with two men on, and with two men out, Kevin Frandsen hits an RBI single, scoring Tony Gwynn, Junior, who had started the inning off with a walk, then moved up to second base on Marlon Byrd’s walk, making it a 6-1 Braves’ lead, while sending pinch runner Clete Thomas, who was pinch running for Byrd, up to second base. That would end up being the final score as Cory Gearrin threw a 1-2-3 ninth.

David Buchanan threw three scoreless innings, giving up a hit and a walk. Sean O’Sullivan took the lost (1-1, 7.04) as he pitched two and two-thirds innings, giving up six runs on eight hits, while he struck out a batter. Kyle Simon pitched a third of an inning, striking out the only man whom he would face. Antonio Bastardo pitched a 1-2-3 inning, striking out a batter. Jake Diekman pitched an inning, giving up three runs on three hits, as he struck out a batter. Julio Teheran pitched four 1-2-3 innings, striking out three. Atahualpa Severino (1-1, 11.25) got the win as he threw an inning, plus one batter, walking a batter. Anthony Varvaro collected his third hold of the spring as he pitched a 1-2-3 inning. Craig Kimbrel pitched an inning, giving up a run on a hit and two walks, while striking out a batter. Juan Jaime and Cory Gearrin combined for two scoreless innings, giving up a hit (Jaime), while striking out a batter (Gearrin) between them.
