He will be shooting for his seventh win of the season, while trying to keep the Rockies under control. The Rockies will counter with Jhoulys Chacin (7-9, 3.79), who is coming off a win against the Dodgers on August 28, as he pitched seven innings, giving up a run on four hits and four walks, while striking out seven. In his last three starts, his record is 2-1, as he pitched nineteen and two-thirds innings, giving up six runs on twelve hits and ten walks, while striking out twenty. He will be trying to end the Phils’ trip on a low note. The Phils plan to end the road trip on a high note, with the bats finally coming out to play.

The Phils once again are unable to score runs behind Roy Halladay, while just escaping being no-hit, as they lose to the Dodgers, 3-0.

The Phils once again give their ace no runs support while just barely escaping being no-hit as they lose to the Dodgers, 3-0. They are now once again trailing the Braves by three games in the NL East race.

The Dodgers took the lead in the first as, with two men on, and with two men out, James Loney hits an RBI single, scoring Ryan Theriot, who had earlier walked, and then went to second on Andre Ethier’s single, giving the Dodgers a 1-0 lead, before Ethier, who had earlier singled, was thrown out, 9-5, trying to reach third base, to end the inning. The Dodgers increased their lead in the second as, with runners on the corners, and with nobody out, Rod Barajas hits into a 5-4-3 doubleplay, wiping out at second James Carroll, who had just singled, while scoring from third Casey Blake, who had earlier singled, then went to third on Carroll’s single, giving the Dodgers a 2-0 lead. The Dodgers then made it 3-0 in the fifth as Barajas hits a lead-off home run, his fifteenth home run of the season. That would be all the runs that Dodgers’ starter Hiroki Kuroda would need, as he would no-hit the Phils for seven and one-third innings, striking out six, while allowing two walks (Carlos Ruiz in the sixth, Jayson Werth in the eighth) and a hit batter (Werth in the second) to reach base, before, with a runner on first (Raul Ibanez, after hitting into a force out, 6-4, as Werth, who had just walked, takes out second baseman Theriot with a take-out slide to stop the doubleplay attempt) and with one man out, Shane Victorino gets a single, breaking up the no-hit bid, while sending Ibanez up to second base. But the Phils would be denied a change to score as Kuroda strikes out Ruiz, swinging, for his seventh strike out of the game, before Hong-Chih Kuo is brought in, getting pinch hitter Mike Sweeney to hit into a force out, 6-4, wiping out Victorino at second base, to end the inning. The Phils would then go down 1-2-3 in the ninth, with Placido Polanco ending the game by lining out to Loney.

Roy Halladay took the lost as he pitches seven inning, giving up three runs on ten hits and a walk, while striking out four. His record is now 16-10 with an ERA of 2.27. David Herndon and J.C. Romero combine for a scoreless inning, giving up a hit (Romero), while striking out a batter (Romero). Hiroki Kuroda gets the win as he pitches seven and two-thirds shut out inning, giving up a hit, two walks and hitting a batter, while striking out seven. His record is now 10-11 with a 3.39 ERA. Hong-Chih Kuo pitches an inning and a third, recording his seventh save of the year.

The Phils had only one hit, a single by Victorino in the eighth, as they once again just avoid being no-hit, as the bats were a bit too aggressive at the plate for their own good.

The Phils (73-58, 2nd East) continue their three-game series with the Dodgers (68-64, 4th West) with a night game tonight. The game will be played at Dodgers Stadium and will start at 10:10 pm Eastern (7:10 pm Pacific). The Phils will send to the mound Kyle Kendrick (8-7, 4.64), who is coming off a lost to the Astros on August 26, when he went six innings, giving up four runs on nine hits, while striking out one, in the Phils’ 5-1 lost. In his last three starts, his record is 1-2, as he pitched eighteen and a third innings, giving up ten runs on twenty-four hits and five walks, while striking out seven. He will be trying to end his personal two game losing streak, while hoping that the bats will finally wake up and do some real damage. The Dodgers will counter with Carlos Monasterios (3-4, 3.54), who is coming off a no-decision against the Brewers on August 26, when he went four and a third innings, giving up a run on two hits and a walk, while striking out three, in the Dodgers’ 7-1 win. In his last three appearances on the mound, two of which were starts, his record is 0-1 with two no-decisions, as he pitched ten and a third innings, giving up five runs, three of which were earned, on twelve hits and three walks, while striking out ten. He will be trying to even up his record against a cold Phils’ offense. The Phils will be trying to break out of their present slump, so that they can stay close to the Braves while continuing to hold their present lead in the wild card chase.

Memo to Joe: Phillies own Broxton!!! Phils come from behind to defeat the Dodgers, 10-9.

In a dramatic turn of events, the Phils come back to defeat the Dodgers by scoring eight runs in the last two innings, with the last four coming off of Jonathan Broxton in a wild ninth inning, winning the game with a Carlos Ruiz walk-off double, 10-9.

The Dodgers took the lead in the first as, with runners on the corners, and with two men out, Ronnie Belliard hits an RBI single, scoring Scott Podsednik, who had earlier singled, moved to second on Ryan Theriot’s ground out, 4-3, then went to third on Andre Ethier’s ground out, 4-3, giving the Dodgers a 1-0 lead, while sending James Loney, who had just walked, on to second base. Matt Kemp then gave the Dodgers a 2-0 lead with an RBI single, knocking in Loney, while sending Belliard to second. James Carroll then made it a 3-0 Dodgers’ lead with an RBI single of his own, scoring Belliard, while sending Kemp to third, before moving up to second on the late throw to third. The Phils got a run back in the second as, with two men on, and with one man out, Joe Blanton hits an RBI ground out, 5-3, knocking in Carlos Ruiz, who had earlier singled, then went to third on Wilson Valdez’s double, making it a 3-1 Dodgers’ lead, while sending Valdez, who had just doubled, over to third base. The Phils then cut the Dodgers’ lead down to 3-2 in the fourth as, with a runner on second, and with one man out, Ruiz hit an RBI single, scoring Jayson Werth, who had earlier singled, and then stole second base. The Dodgers would get one of those runs back in the fifth as, with two men on, and with one man out, Belliard hits a sacrifice fly, scoring Theriot, who had earlier singled, and had gone on to third on Ethier’s single, making it a 4-2 Dodgers’ lead. The Dodgers then made it 6-2 in the seventh as, with one man on, and with one out, Kemp hits a two-run bomb, his nineteenth home run of the year, knocking in Loney, who had earlier singled. The Dodgers added to their lead in the eighth as, with two men on, and with two men out, Casey Blake hits an RBI single, scoring Podsendik, who was earlier safe at first on first baseman Mike Sweeney’s fielding error, then moved up to second on Ethier’s single, making it a 7-2 Dodgers’ lead, while sending Ethier, who had earlier singled, over to third base. Kemp then made it an 8-2 Dodgers’ lead with an RBI single, knocking in Ethier, while sending Blake up to second base. Carroll then gave the Dodgers a 9-2 lead with an RBI single of his own, scoring Blake, while sending Kemp over to third, before moving up to second on the throw. The Phils, after falling behind by seven runs, then started to chip away at the Dodgers’ lead. In their half of the eighth, Placido Polanco started the inning off with a single. Sweeney followed him with a single of his own, sending Polanco to second base. With Werth batting, Ronald Bellsario threw a wild pitch, sending Polanco to third base, and Sweeney up to second base. Werth then hits a two-run single, scoring both Polanco and Sweeney, cutting the Dodgers’ lead down to 9-4. With Ben Francisco batting, Bellsario committed a balk, sending Werth up to second base, although it took the home plate umpire a long time before finally saying that Bellsario’s fake to third and then to first move was a balk, since there was no body on third at the time, as he needed to be prompted first by Phils’ manager, Charlies Manuel, and then by the rest of the umpiring crew. Francisco then hits an RBI double, bringing in Werth, cutting the Dodgers lead down even further to 9-5. After Ruiz hits a bullet to third, that was grabbed by third baseman Blake, for a 5-3 ground out, the inning’s first out, Valdez hits an RBI single, knocking in Francisco, making it a 9-6 Dodgers’ lead. The Dodgers would then get out of the inning as pinch hitter Ben Francisco flies out to left, and then, after Jimmy Rollins walks, Raul Ibanez ended the inning by hitting into a force out, 4-6, wiping out Rollins at second base. After Danys Baez shut down the Dodgers in the top of the ninth, the Dodgers brought in Jonathan Broxton to nail down the game for them. He did not do so. After falling behind Polanco 2-0, he hit him with his third pitch, as Polanco turned his body so that the ball would not hit his right elbow, sending Polanco to first. The next two batters, Sweeney and Werth, then walked, loading up the bases, with nobody out. Ben Francisco then followed by hitting what should have been a doubleplay grounder to third, but was misplayed by Blake who pulled up his glove too soon, becoming a fielding error, allowing both Polanco and Sweeney to score, cutting the Dodgers lead down to 9-7, while sending Werth up to second base. Now, with two men on, and with still nobody out, Ruiz hits a 1-1 slider towards left center field, where it would hit against the wall and bounce in for a double, knocking in first Werth, and then Francisco, who was on Werth’s heels, with the winning run, as the Phils had a 10-9 walk-off win.

Joe Blanton gets a no-decision as he pitches five and two-thirds innings, giving up four runs on eight hits and four walks, while striking out three. Chad Durbin pitches an innings and a third, giving up two runs on two hits and a walk, while striking out one. J.C. Romero pitches two-thirds of an inning, giving up two unearned run on a hit, while striking out a batter. Jose Contreras pitches a third of an inning, giving up a run on three hits, while striking out a batter. Danys Baez gets the win as he pitches a scoreless inning, giving up a hit. His record is now 3-3 with a 5.40 ERA. Clayton Kershaw also receives a no-decision, as he pitches six and two-thirds innings, giving up two runs on six hits and two walks, while striking out four. Hong-Chih Kuo records his seventeenth hold of the year as he pitches a third of an inning, getting out the only man that he would face. Ronald Belisaro pitches to four batters, giving up four runs on four hits, a wild pitch and a balk. Kenley Jansen pitches a third of an inning, giving up a hit. George Sherrill records his third hold of the year as he pitches two-thirds of an inning, giving up a walk. Jonathan Broxton blew his fifth save of the season, before taking the lost, as he faces five batters, giving up four runs on just one hit, two walks and a hit batter. His record is now 4-4 with a 3.50 ERA.

The Phils had twelve hits in the game, with Carlos Ruiz leading the team with three hits, two singles and a double, knocking in three runs, including the game winner, as he raised his batting average to .294. He was followed by Placido Polanco, Mike Sweeney, Jayson Werth and Wilson Valdez, who all had two hits apiece, with Polanco, Sweeney and Werth’s hits all being singles, with Werth knocking in two runs, while Valdez’s hits were a single and a double, as he knocks in a run. Ben Francisco had the other Phil hit, a double, as he knocks in two runs. Joe Blanton knocks in the other Phil RBI with a ground out, while the other run came in on an error. The offense this time was able to come back, in spite of the bullpen, although helped by a Broxton melt down in the ninth. Seriously, either the Phils are deep in his head (Thank you Matt Stairs), or the Phils got some supernatural assistant from a young male fan in the ninth. Either way, I think Joe Torre might think twice and maybe a third time before using him with such a small lead in the ninth against the Phils. Not so good things seems to happen to him. 😉

The Phils (64-50, 2nd) will now go to New York for a three-game set with the Mets (57-57, 4th). The game will be played at Citi Field and will start at 7:10 pm Eastern. The Phils will send to the mound Cole Hamels (7-8, 3.45), who is coming off a lost against the Mets on August 7, where he pitched seven strong innings, giving up only one run on six hits, while he struck out eleven, in the Phils’ 1-0 lost. In his last three starts, his record is 0-1 with two no-decisions, as he pitched nineteen innings, giving up eight runs on eighteen hits and four waks, while striking out twenty-nine. He will be trying to get even with the Mets for his last lost. The Mets will counter with R.A. Dickey (7-5, 2.65), who is coming off a lost against the Phils on August 8, as he went only three innings, giving up four runs, on eight hits and a walk, in the Phils’ 6-5 win. In his last three starts, his record is 1-1 with a no-decision, as he pitched seventeen and a third innings, giving up six runs on nineteen hits and seven walks, while striking out four. He hopes that the Phils won’t be able to handle him again. The Phils will be trying to take the momentum from their ninth-inning win last night into New York City for the weekend.

You ever have one of those days…? The Phils are crushed by the Dodgers, 15-9.

The Phils’ pitching staff is beaten up by the Dodgers’ bats, despite the offense supplying some runs, as the Phils lose to the Dodgers, 15-9.

The Dodgers took a quick 1-0 lead in the first as, with one man on, and with one man out, Andre Ethier hits an RBI single, scoring Scott Podsednik, who had earlier singled, and had moved up to second on Ryan Theriot’s ground out, 6-3. The Dodgers added to their lead in the third as, with one man on, and with one man out, Ethier hits an RBI double, scoring Theriot, who had just singled, to give the Dodgers a 2-0 lead. Three batters later, with runners on the corners, and now with two men out, Jay Gibbons hits an RBI single, scoring Ethier, who had moved up to second base on James Loney’s walk, then went to third when Casey Blake’s hit a grounder to third, for a 5-4 force out at second of Loney for the inning’s second out, giving the Dodgers a 3-0 lead, while sending Blake, who was safe at first on the force out, to third. The Dodgers then increased their lead in the fourth as, with the bases loaded, via a single to Brad Ausmus, who then moved up to second as Jimmy Rollins made a miss catch error on a throw from Phils’ starter Kyle Kendrick on a ball hit by Dodgers’ starter Vicente Padilla, who was then safe on first on the error, and a single by Podsednik, which sent Ausmus to third, and Padilla to second, and with nobody out, Theriot hits a sacrifice fly, scoring Ausmus, to give the Dodgers a 4-0 lead, while moving Padilla to third base after the catch. After Kendrick is replaced by Antonio Bastardo, he is greeted by Ethier with an RBI single, scoring Padilla, giving the Dodgers a 5-0 lead, while sending Podsednik up to second base. The next batter, Loney, gave the Dodgers a 6-0 lead with an RBI single, scoring Podsednik, while moving Ethier to second base. Blake then followed with an RBI single, knocking in Ethier, giving the Dodgers a 7-0 lead, while sending Loney to third base. The Phils tried to make a come back in their half of the fourth as, with the bases loaded, via a single to Placido Polanco and walks to Raul Ibanez and Jayson Werth, and with one man out, Dom Brown hits a sacrifice fly, scoring Polanco, making it a 7-1 Dodgers’ lead. The Phils then made it a 7-2 Dodgers’ lead in the fifth as, with runners on the corners, and with one man out, Polanco hits an RBI ground out, 5-3, knocking in Wilson Valdez, who had earlier singled, and had gone to third on Rollins’ single, while moving Rollins up to second base. The next batter, Ross Gload, then followed with a two-run home run, his fifth home run of the year, knocking in Rollins, cutting the Dodgers’ lead to 7-4. The Dodgers would get a run back in the sixth as, with two men on, and with nobody out, Loney hits an RBI double, scoring Theriot, who had earlier singled, and then stole second base, giving the Dodgers an 8-4 lead, while sending Ethier, who had just walked, to third base. The Dodgers then made it a 9-4 lead as, with runners on second and third, and with still nobody out, Blake hits a sacrifice fly, scoring Ethier. The Dodgers then took an 11-4 lead as Gibbons hits a two-run home run, his first home run of the season, knocking in Loney. The Phils then made it an 11-5 Dodgers’ lead as, with one man out, Brown hits a solo home run, his first career home run. The Dodgers then added to their lead in the seventh as, with the bases loaded again, via a single by Theriot, a single by Ethier, sending Theriot to second base, a force out by Loney, 1-6, forcing out Ethier at second, while Theriot went to third and Loney would beat the throw to first, and a walk to Blake, moving Loney up to second base, and with two men out, pinch hitter Matt Kemp hits a two-run single, scoring both Theriot and Loney, giving the Dodgers a 13-5 lead, while moving Blake up to third. The Phils would make it a 13-7 Dodgers’ lead as, with a runner on base, and with two men out, Gload hits a two-run home run, his sixth home run of the year and his second home run of the night, knocking in pinch hitter Greg Dobbs, who had just singled. The Dodgers then made it 15-7 in the ninth as, with a runner on base, and with one man out, Blake hits a two-run home run, his twelfth home run of the year, knocking in Ethier, who was earlier hit by the pitch. The Phils then cut the Dodgers’ lead down to 15-9 as, with the bases loaded, via Gload reaching base on a force out, 4-6, wiping out Rollins, who had earlier singled, at second base, a Raul Ibanez single, sending Gload to second, and a Werth walk, moving both runners up a base, and with two men out, Brown hits a two-run double, scoring both Gload and Ibanez, while sending Werth on to third. But that would be it as pinch hitter Cole Hamels flied out to left, ending the game.

Kyle Kendrick took the lost as he pitches just three and a third innings, giving up six runs, five of which were earned, on eight hits and two walks, while striking out one. His record is now 7-5 with a 4.60 ERA. Antonio Bastardo pitches two-thirds of an inning, giving up a run on three hits, while striking out a batter. David Herndon pitches two innings, giving up four runs on three hits and a walk, while striking out a batter. Danys Baez pitches an inning, giving up two runs on three hits and a walk. Chad Durbin pitches two-thirds of an inning, striking out both men whom he would face. Vicente Padilla gets the win as he pitches five innings, giving up four runs on six hits and two walks, while striking out two. His record is now 6-3 with a 3.32 ERA. Ronald Belisario pitches an inning, giving up a run on one hit. Carlos Monasterios pitches one and two-thirds innings, giving up two runs on four hits, while striking out two. George Sherrill pitches an inning, giving up two runs on two hits. Octavio Dotel pitches a third of an inning, giving up a hit and a walk.

The Phils had fourteen hits in the game, with Ross Gload leading the team with three hits, a single and two two-run home runs, knocking in four runs. He was followed by Jimmy Rollins, Dom Brown and Wilson Valdez who each had two hits, with Rollins and Valdez’s hits being singles, with both man scoring a run, while Brown’s hits were a double and a solo home run, his first in the major, as he knocks in four runs, one via a sacrifice fly. Placido Polanco, Raul Ibanez, Jayson Werth, pinch hitter Greg Dobbs and pinch hitter Mike Sweeney had the other five Phils’ hit, all singles, with Polanco knocking in a run. The Phils’ offense was unable to catch up as the bullpen was unable to stop the previously slumping Dodgers.

The Phils (62-50, 2nd NL East) will continue their series with the Dodgers (59-54, 3rd NL West) with a night game tonight. The game will be played at Citizens Bank Park, and will start at 7:05 pm Eastern. In his last three starts, his record is 1-1 with a no-decision, as he had pitched eighteen and two-thirds innings, giving up three runs on twelve hits and seven walks, while striking out thirteen. He will be trying for his tenth win of the year. The Phils will be trying to rebound from the thumping that the Dodgers gave them last night, to even up the series.

Repeat!!!! The Phils’ bats buried the Dodgers as the Phils win game five of the NLCS, 10-4, to return to the World Series to defend their championship.

Four home runs, with two of them by Jayson Werth, help rocket the Phils past the Dodgers, 10-4, to win the 2009 National League Championship Series, 4 games to 1, to become the first National League squad, since the 1995-96 Atlanta Braves, to win back-to-back National League pennants. The Phillies will now try to become the first NL team, since the Big Red Machine of Cincinnati, to win back-to-back World Series (1975-76).

The Dodgers took the early lead in the first as, with two men out, Andre Ethier hits a solo home run, his first home run iof the series, to give the Dodgers a 1-0 lead. The Phils then struck back in their half of the first as, with two men on base, and with two men out, Jayson Werth hits a three-run bomb into the right field seats, his second home run of the series, knocking in Chase Utley and Ryan Howard, who had both been walked, to give the Phils a 3-1 lead. The Dodgers got a run back in the second as James Loney hits a lead-off home run, his second home run of the series, cutting the Phils’ lead to 3-2. The Phillies would get that run back in their half of the second as Pedro Feliz hits the first pitch into right field for a solo home run of his own, his first of both the series and of the post-season, to give the Phils a 4-2 lead. The Phillies then increased their lead in the fourth as, with one man on, and with nobody out, Raul Ibanez hits an RBI double, knocking in Werth, who had just singled, giving the Phils a 5-2 lead. Five batters later, with the bases loaded, thanks to a Carlos Ruiz walk, then Phils’ starter Cole Hamels moving both Ibanez and Ruiz up a base with a sacrifice bunt, and Jimmy Rollins then being hit by the pitch, and with two men out, Shane Victorino brought in another run as he in turn was hit by the pitch, forcing in Ibanez, making it a 6-2 Phils’ lead, as both Ruiz and Rollins moved up a base. The Dodgers got a run back in the fifth as, with one man out, pinch hitter Orlando Hudson hits a pinch hit solo home run, his first of the series, cutting the Phils’ lead down to 6-3. The Phils then added to their lead in the sixth as, with a runner on base, and with two men out, Victorino hits a two-run shot into left field, his second home run of the series, knocking in Rollins, who had earlier been hit by the pitch for the second straight time, to make it an 8-3 Phils’ lead. The Phils increased their lead in the seventh as, with one man out, Werth hits a solo home run, his second home run of the game, his third home run of the series and his fifth of the post-season, to give the Phils a 9-3 lead. The Dodgers then made one last attempt in the eighth as, with the bases loaded, via singles to Ronnie Belliard and Ethier, who sent Belliard to third with his single, and a walk to Manny Ramirez, and with nobody out, Matt Kemp hits an RBI single, scoring Belliard, and moving both Either and Ramirez up a base, making it a 9-4 Phils’ lead, with the bases still loaded. But the Phils then got out of the inning, as Ryan Madson then got Loney to foul out to the third baseman, then struck out Russell Martin, swinging, then got Casey Blake to hit into a force out, 6-4, wiping out Kemp at second. The Phils then got that run back in their half of the eighth as, with runners on second and third, thanks to a single by Rollins and a ground-rule double, thanks to Fan Interference, by Victorino, and with two men out, with Utley batting, Rollins would score on a wild pitch by Dodgers’ reliever Ronald Belisario, giving the Phils a 10-4 lead, while sending Victorino over to third. The Phils then send out Brad Lidge to end the game. He first struck out pinch hitter Mark Loretta swinging for the first out. He then got Rafael Furcal to foul out to the catcher for the second out. He then got Belliard to fly out to center to end the game, and give the Phils their second straight NL pennant, and the seventh NL pennant in the francishe’s long history.

Cole Hamels received a no-decision as he lasted only four and a third innings, giving up three runs on five hits and a walk, while striking out three. J.A. The Phils had eight hits in the game, with Jayson Werth leading the team with three hits, including two home runs, as he knocked in four runs. Shane Victorino followed with two hits, a two-run double and a ground-rule double, knocking in three runs. Jimmy Rollins, Raul Ibanez and Pedro Feliz followed with one hit each, with Ibanez’s hit being an RBI double and Feliz’s hit being a solo home run. The Phils had six extra-base hits in the game, two doubles and four home runs, as the offense, once again, got the hits when they needed them.

The Phillies (4-1) now wait to find out who their American League opponent will be in the 2009 World Series, as the 2009 ALCS between the New York Yankees and the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim continues tonight in Anaheim.
