The Phils rally from behind before winning in extra-innings, 7-5, taking the series from the Padres.

Philadelphia_PhilliesAfter allowing the Padres to build up a 5-2 lead, the Phils come from behind to tie the game up at 5-5, before winning it in the 13th inning, 7-5, to take the series from the Padres.

The Phils took the lead in the top of the first as, with one man on, and with one man out, Michael Young hits an RBI double, knocking in Chase Utley, who had just singled, giving the Phils a 1-0 lead. The Phils increased their lead in the top of the second as, with a man on third, and with one man out, Carlos Ruiz hits a sacrifice fly, scoring Delmon Young, who had started the inning off with a double, then moved up to third base on John Mayberry, Jr.’s fly out to center, giving the Phils a 2-0 lead. The Padres cut the Phils’ lead in the bottom of the third as, with a runner on second, and with one man out, Logan Forsythe hits an RBI double, knocking in Pedro Ciriaco, who had started the inning off with a single, then moved up to second base on Robbie Erlin’s sacrifice bunt, making it a 2-1 Phils’ lead. The Padres tied the game up at two-all one batter later as, with a man on second, and with still one man out, Chris Denorfia hits a single, which is then deflected off of right fielder D. Young, allowing Forsythe to score on the missed catch error. The Padres took the lead in the bottom of the fifth as, with a man on second, and with two men out, Denorfia hits a two-run home run, his sixth home run of the season, scoring Forsythe, who had just hit a ground-rule double, giving the Padres a 4-2 lead. The Padres then made it a 5-2 lead in the bottom of the sixth as, with a man on second, and with nobody out, Kyle Blanks hits an RBI double, knocking in Chase Headley, who had started the inning off with a double. The Phils got a run back in the top of the seventh as, with two men on, and with two men out, pinch-hitter Kevin Frandsen hits an RBI single, knocking in Dom Brown, who had started the inning off with a single, then moved up to second base on Ruiz’s single, making it a 5-3 Padres’ lead, while sending Ruiz, who had just singled, up to second base. The Phils tied the game up at five-all in the top of the eighth as, with one man on, and with two men out, D. Young hits a two-run home run, his seventh home run of the season, scoring Brown, who had just doubled. The Phils retook the lead in the top of the thirteenth as, with two men on, and with two men out, Ben Revere hits a grounder that is missed played by second baseman Forsythe, becoming a fielding error, which allows Revere to reach first base, before Forsythe threw towards home plate in an attempt to throw out Utley, who had started the inning off being hit by a pitch, before moving up to second base on Brown’s walk, as he was trying to score, after having first run past third base, but Forsythe’s throw bounce off of catcher Nick Hundley, allowing Utley to score on Forsythe’s throwing error, giving the Phils a 6-5 lead. On the same play, as the ball gets away from Hundley, Brown, who had just walked, and had gone to first second base and then to third base on the play, also headed for home, soon crossing the plate ahead of pitcher Tommy Layne’s attempt to tag him out, giving the Phils a 7-5 lead. That would end up being the final score as Jonathan Papelbon collected his fifteenth save of the year by pitching a scoreless bottom of the thirteenth.

Cole Hamels received a no-decision as he went six innings, giving up five runs, four of which were earned, on seven hits and two walks, while striking out five. J.C. Ramirez, Phillippe Aumont and Jake Diekman combined for five scoreless innings, giving up a hit (Diekman) and two walks (Aumont) between them, while striking out two (Ramirez (1), Aumont (1)). Joe Savery (1-0, 2.25) got the win as he threw a 1-2-3 inning, striking out a batter. Jonathan Papelbon received his fifteenth save of the season as he threw a scoreless inning, giving up a hit, while striking out a batter. Robbie Erlin also received a no-decision as he went six and a third innings, giving up three runs, two of which were earned, on four hits and a walk, while striking out seven. Nick Vincent collected his first hold of the season as he pitched a third of an inning, giving up two hits and a walk, while striking out a batter. Joe Thatcher collected his ninth hold of the year as he pitched an inning, giving up a run on a hit, while striking out a batter. Luke Gregerson committed his fourth blown save of the season as he pitched a third of an inning, giving up a run on a hit. Dale Thayer, Tim Stauffer and Huston Street combined for five scoreless innings, giving up a hit (Street) between them, while striking out two (Thayer (1), Stauffer (1)). Tommy Layne (0-2, 2.45) took the lost as he pitched two-thirds of an inning, giving up two unearned runs on a hit batter and a walk. Tyson Ross pitched a third of an inning, giving up a hit.

The Phils had ten hits in the game, with Dom Brown (Single, Double), Delmon Young (Double, Home Run, 2 RBIs) and Carlos Ruiz (Singles, RBI), all leading the team with two hits each. Chase Utley (Single), Michael Young (Double, RBI), John Mayberry, Jr. (Single) and pinch-hitter Kevin Frandsen (Single, RBI), had the other four Phils’ hit. The last two Phils’ run came in on a couple of errors. The Phils also had three walks (Jimmy Rollins, Brown, Ruiz), a sacrifice fly (Ruiz), a sacrifice bunt (Cole Hamels) and a hit batter (Utley)) in the ballgame.

The Phils (38-41, 3rd East) start a four-games series with the Dodgers (35-42, 5th West) starting with a night game tonight. The game is to be played at Dodgers Stadium and is to start at 10:10 pm EDT (7:10 pm PDT). The Phils will send to the mound Jonathan Pettibone (3-3, 4.14), who is coming off a no-decision against the Mets on June 22, as he went six innings, giving up a run on five hits and a walk, while striking out one, in the Phils’ 8-7 walk-off win. Pettibone will once again be looking for his fourth win of the season, hoping that the Phils’ bullpen will not allow this one to get out of hand. The Dodgers will counter with Zack Greinke (4-2. 3.79), who is coming off a win against the Padres on June 22, as he went eight innings, giving up a run on four hits and a walk, while striking out eight, in the Dodgers’ 6-1 win. He’ll be out to beat the Phils. The Phils will be out to continue their present winning streak on the west coast.

The Phils recover from Monday’s night lost as they defeat the Padres, 6-2.

The Padres took the lead in the bottom of the second as, with two men on, and with nobody out, Alexi Amarista hits an RBI ground out, 4-3, knocking in Kyle Blanks, who had started the inning off with a single, then went to third base on Yasmani Grandi’s double, giving the Padres a 1-0 lead, while sending Grandi, who had just doubled, over to third base. The Padres then made it a 2-0 lead one batter later as Pedro Ciriaco hits an RBI single, scoring Grandi. The Phils took the lead in the top of the third as, with two men on, and with two men out, Dom Brown hits a three-run home run, his twentieth home run of the season, knocking in Jimmy Rollins, who had started the inning off with a walk, then went to third base on Michael Young’s single, and M. Young, who had earlier singled, giving the Phils a 3-0 lead. The Phils added to their lead in the top of the fifth as, with the bases loaded, via singles by Rollins and Chase Utley, with Rollins stopping at third base, and a walk to Ryan Howard, moving Utley up to second base, and with one man out, Brown walks, forcing in Rollins, giving the Phils a 4-2 lead, while moving both Utley and Howard up a base, leaving the bases loaded. The Phils then took a 5-2 lead as, with John Mayberry, Jr. batting, Utley would score on pitcher Brad Brach’s wild pitch, while Howard would move up to third base, and Brown went to second base. The Phils then increased their lead as Mayberry hits a sacrifice fly, scoring Howard, giving the Phils a 6-2 lead. That would end up being the final score as Antonio Bastardo pitched a scoreless ninth, first striking out Chris Denorfia on a called third strike, then Logan Forsythe, swinging, after allowing two runners to get into scoring position with one man out, to end the game.

Kyle Kendrick (7-4, 3.46) got the win as he pitched eighth strong innings, giving up two runs on seven scattered hits and a hit batter, while striking out six. Antonio Bastardo threw a scoreless inning, as he gave up two hits, while striking out two. Jason Marquis (9-3, 3.99) took the lost as he pitched four and one-third innings, giving up six runs on six hits and five walks, while striking out four. Brad Branch pitched two-thirds of an inning, giving up a walk and a wild pitch. Tyson Ross, Dale Thayer and Tommy Layne combined for four scoreless innings, giving up a hit (Thayer) and a walk (Layne) between them, while striking out three Phils (Ross (1), Layne (2)).

The Phils had seven hits in the game, with Michael Young leading the team with two hits, both singles. Jimmy Rollins (Single), Chase Utley (Single), Dom Brown (Home Run, 4 RBIs), John Mayberry, Jr. (Single) and Carlos Ruiz (Single) had the other five Phils’ hits. The Phils (37-41, 3rd East) will conclude their series with the Padres (39-39, 3rd West) with a night game tonight. The game will be played at Petco Park and is to start at 10:10 pm EDT (7:10 PDT). The Phils will send to the mound Cole Hamels (2-11, 4.50) who is coming off a lost against the Mets on June 21, as he went six innings, giving up four runs on seven hits and three walks, while striking out five, in the Phils’ 4-3 lost. He will be trying once again win his third start of the season. The Padres will counter with Robbie Erlin (1-0 , 4.15), who is coming off a win against the Blue Jays on June 1, as he went six and two-thirds innings, giving up two runs on eight hits, while striking out four, in the Padres’ 4-3 win. He will be trying to give the Pardes the series’ win. The Phils will be trying to win the series from the Padres.

Cliff Lee finally gets win number ten, his only win in the month of July, as the Phils’ offense welcome Hunter Pence with a sixteen-hit attack against the Bucos as they win, 7-4.

The Phils took the lead in the second as Ryan Howard lead-off the inning with a home run, his twenty-first home run of the season, giving the Phils a 1-0 lead. The Phils then made it a 2-0 lead in the third as, with one man out, Jimmy Rollins hits a solo home run, his thirteenth home run of the year. The Phils then added to their lead three batters later as, with two men on, and with still one man out, Howard hits an RBI double, knocking in Shane Victorino, who had earlier singled, then stole second base, giving the Phils a 3-0 lead, while sending Chase Utley, who had just walked, on to third. The Pirates cut down the Phils’ lead to 3-2 in the fourth as, with one man on, and with two men out, Pedro Alvarez hits a two-run home run, his third home run of the year, knocking in Brandon Wood, who had just singled. The Phils got a run back in their half of the fourth as, with two men on, and with two men out, Utley hits a single, that allowed Cliff Lee, who had earlier singled, then stopped at second base on Rollins’ single, to reach third, while Rollins, who had just singled,  would stop at second base, before Lee would score when right fielder Steve Pearce committed a fielding error, giving the Phils a 4-2 lead. The Phils then made it a 5-2 lead as Howard hits an RBI single, scoring Rollins, while sending Utley on to third. The Phils then added to their lead in the seventh as, with one man on, and with one man out, Carlos Ruiz hits an RBI double, scoring Placido Polanco, who had just singled, giving the Phils a 6-2 lead.  The Pirates then tried to rally in the eighth as, with runners on the corners, and with one man out, Neil Walker hits an RBI single, knocking in Pedro Ciriaco, who had earlier gotten on base with a bunt single, moved up to second base on Matt Diaz’s walk, then went to third on Andrew McCutchen’s force out grounder, 6-4, as Diaz is wiped out at second for the inning’s first out, making it a 6-3 Phils’ lead. Two batters later, after Pearce had hit into a force out, 5-4, wiping out Walker at second base for the inning’s second out, while sending McCutchen on to third, Wood made it a 6-4 Phils’ lead as he hits an RBI single, scoring Wood, while Pearce would stop at second base. The Phils got a run back in their half of the eighth as, with runners on the corners, and with one man out, Hunter Pence hits an RBI single, scoring Victorino, who had earlier hit a lead-off triple, while sending Howard, who had just been intentionally walked, on to second base, giving the Phils a 7-4 lead. That would be the final score as Ryan Madson recorded his eighteenth save of the year as he pitched a 1-2-3 ninth, striking out the side.

Cliff Lee (10-7, 3.14) finally got his tenth win of the year, as he went seven and one-third innings, giving up four runs on eight hits and a walk, while striking out eleven. Antonio Bastardo would received his eighth hold of the season as he pitched a third of an inning, striking outn the only man that he would face. Ryan Madson recorded his eighteenth save of the season as he pitched a 1-2-3 inning, striking out the side. James McDonald (7-5, 4.17) took the lost as he pitched five innings, giving up five runs on ten hits and two walks, while striking out five. Daniel McCutchen pitched a scoreless inning, giving up a hit, while striking out a batter. Chris Resop pitched an inning, giving up a run on two hits, while striking out one. Jose Veras pitched an inning, giving up a run on three hits and a walk.

The Phils had sixteen hits in the ballgame, with Ryan Howard leading the team with four hits, a single, two doubles, and a solo home run, being a triple short of hitting the cycle, as he knocked in three runs, while raising his batting average up to .254. Jimmy Rollins (Single, Home Run, RBI), Shane Victorino (Single, Triple), Placido Polanco (Singles), Carlos Ruiz (Single, Double, RBI) and Cliff Lee (Singles), all followed with two hits apiece. The Phils (67-39, 1st East) will conclude their series with the Pirates (54-51, 3rd Central) with an afternoon game at Citizens Bank Park. The game will start at 1:35 pm EDT. The Phils will send to the mound Vance Worley (7-1, 2.02), who is coming off a complete game win against the Giants on July 26, as he gave up just two runs on three hits and a walk, while striking out five, in the Phils’ 7-2 win. He will be trying to give the Phils a sweep. The Pirates will counter with Jeff Karstens (8-5, 2.41), who is coming off a no-decision against the Braves on July 26, as he went five innings, giving upm three runs on six hits and three walks, while striking out three in the Pirates’ 4-3 extra-innings lost. He will be out to keep the Pirates from being swept. The Phils will be out to end their successful home stand with a sweep.

During the night that they acquire Hunter Pence from the Astros, the Phillies’ bats decided to come out as they routed the Pirates, 10-3.

Two batters later, with runners on the corners, as Howard stopped at third base on a Shane Victorino single, and with still one man out, the Phils increased their lead as Raul Ibanez hits an RBI single, scoring Howard, to give the Phils a 3-0 lead, while sending Victorino on to third base. The Phils then broke the game wide open in the second as they batted around. The Phils started the inning as Wilson Valdez struck out, but reached first base as Pirates’ starter Charlie Morton threw a wild pitch. After Roy Halladay made the inning’s first out as he struck out failing to bunt Vladez over to second base, Jimmy Rollins singled, sending Valdez on to third. Now with runners on the corners and with one man out, Brown hits a grounder to second baseman Neil Walker who committed a fielding error, allowing Valdez to score, giving the Phils a 4-0 lead, while allowing Rollins to reach third base on the play. The Phils then took a 7-0 lead as Utley followed with a three-run home run, his eighth home run of the year, knocking in both Rollins and Brown. Four batters later, after Howard had flown out to left, for the inning’s second out, the Phils loaded up the base on a Victorino triple, an Ibanez walk, and Carlos Ruiz being hit by the pitch, sending Ibanez up to second base, before Valdez forced in a run with a walk, bringing in Victorino, giving the Phils an 8-0 lead, while moving both Ibanez and Ruiz up a base. The Phils then made it a 10-0 lead in the seventh as, with one man on, and with two men out, Rollins hits a two-run home run, his twelfth home run of the season, knocking in Ruiz, who had earlier walked. The Pirates finally got on the board in the eighth as, with two men on, and with two men out, Pedro Ciriaco hits a two-run double, knocking in Lyle Overbay, who had earlier walked, then stopped at third on Michael McKenry’s double and McKenry, who had just doubled, making it a 10-2 Phils’ lead. One batter later, the Pirates cut down the Phils’ lead to 10-3 as Xavier Paul hits an RBI single, scoring Ciriaco. That would be the final score as David Herndon pitched a 1-2-3 ninth.

Roy Halladay (13-4, 2.44) got the win as he pitched seven shut out innings, as he gave up just one hit, while he struck out five, as he became the first NL thirteen game winner. Drew Carpenter pitched an inning, giving up three runs on three hits and a walk, striking out a batter. David Herndon pitched a 1-2-3 inning, striking out two batters. Charlie Morton (8-6, 4.04) took the lost as he pitched only four innings, giving up eight runs, only six of which were earned, on nine hits, four walks, and a wild pitch, while he struck out four. Tony Watson pitched two 1-2-3 innings, striking out four. Jason Grilli also pitched two innings, giving up two runs on two hits and two walks, while striking out four.

The Phils had eleven hits in the ballgame, with Chase Utley (Single, Triple, Home Run, 4 RBIs) and Shane Victorino (Single, Double, Triple) both leading the team with three hits each, each being a hit short of hitting for the cycle. The Phils will send to the mound Cliff Lee (9-7, 3.05), who is coming off a lost against the Padres on July 25, as he went only four innings, giving up five runs on ten hits and a walk, while striking out five, in the Phils’ 5-4 lost. He will once more go for his tenth win of the seasonl, while trying to come back from his last start. The Pirates will counter with James McDonald (7-4, 3.95), who is coming off a win against the Braves on July 25, as he went five and a third innings, giving up eight hits, while striking out nine, in the Pirates’ 3-1 win. He will be trying to cool down the Phils’ bats. The Phils will be trying to finally give Cliff Lee his tenth win of the year.

The Pirates then made it 2-0 as, with a runner on second and now with two men out, John Bowker hits into an RBI double, knocking in Lincoln. The Phils cut the Pirates’ lead in their half of the third as, with a runner on third, and with two men out, Shane Victorino hits an RBI double, knocking in Michael Martinez, who had earlier walked, moved up to second on Roy Oswalt’s sacrifice bunt, 3-4, then went to third on Jimmy Rollins’ ground out, 1-unassisted, making it a 2-1 Pirates’ lead. The Phils would win the game in the ninth as, with runners on second and third, and with two-men out, Tuffy Gosewisch hits a two-run single off of Josh Harrison’s glove, knocking in Pete Orr, who had earlier reached base on a bunt single to first, was safe at second on a force out of Erik Kratz’s grounder, 5-unassisted as Ben Francisco, who had reached base on a bunt single, ran out of the base path, then stopped at second on Orr’s bunt single, and stopped at third on Martinez’s ground out, 4-3, and Kratz’s who was safe at first as Francisco was out at third as he went out of the base line to try and avoid the tag, and then stopped at second on Martinez’s ground out, giving the Phils a 3-2 win.

Roy Oswalt received a no-decision as he pitched six innings, giving up two runs on five hits, as he struck out five. Jose Contreras and J.C. Romero combine for two scoreless innings, giving up a hit (Contreras) and a walk (Romero), while striking out two batters. Ryan Madson gets the win (1-0, 2.57),  as he pitched a scoreless inning, giving up a hit. Brad Lincoln also received a no-decision, as he pitched two and two-thirds innings, giving up a run on a hit, while walking two batters. Chris Resop received his second hold of the spring as he pitched two and a third innings, giving up three hits and a walk, while striking out two. Jose Veras also received his second hold of the spring, as he pitched two innings, giving up two hits and a walk. Michael Crotta received his first hold of the spring, as he pitched a scoreless inning, striking out a batter. Chris Leroux blown his second save attempt of the spring, before taking the lost (1-1, 5.40), as he pitched two-thirds of an inning, giving up two runs on three hits.

One batter later, the Phils took a 2-0 lead as, with still nobody out, Ryan Howard hits an RBI single, scoring Polanco, while sending Ibanez on to third. The Pirates cut the Phils’ lead in their half of the first as, with runners on the corners, via a double by Pedro Ciriaco, and a single by Neil Walker, with Ciriaco stopping at third, and with one man out, Lyle Overbay hits an RBI single to right, knocking in Ciriaco. But, on the play, Walker is thrown out at third by Wilson Valdez on a strong throw, 9-5, for the inning’s second out. The Pirates then tied the game up at two-all in the fourth as, with a runner on second, and with two men out, Andy Marte hits an RBI single, scoring Matt Diaz, who had earlier reached first on a walk, and then stole second base. The Phils regain the lead in the sixth as Howard hits a lead-off home run, his first of the spring, giving the Phils a 3-2 lead. The Pirates then tied it up at three-all in their half of the sixth as, with runners on second and third, and with one man out, Garrett Jones hits into an RBI ground out, three-unassisted, scoring Neil Walker, who had earlier walked, then went to third on Tony Sanchez’s ground-rule double, while moving Sanchez, who had just doubled, over to third base. Danys Baez received a blown save as he pitched an inning and a third, giving up a hit. Dan Meyer also received a blown save, before getting the win (1-0, 9.00), as he pitched an inning, giving up two runs on two hits and a walk, while striking out 2. Drew Carpenter received his first hold of the spring as he pitches a scoreless inning, giving up two hits and a walk, while striking out two batters. Mike Zagurski records his second spring hold as he pitches a scoreless inning, giving up a hit, while striking out one. Antonio Bastardo records his first save of the spring as he pitches a 1-2-3 inning, striking out two. Kevin Correia also received a no-decision as he went three innings, giving up two runs on five hits, while he struck out five. Brian Burres followed with two scoreless innings, giving up a hit, while striking out a batter. Fernando Nieve took the lost (0-1, 27.00) as he pitched an inning and a third, giving up four runs on five hits and a walk, while striking out three. Michael Dubee pitched two-thirds of an inning, giving up a hit, while striking out one. Bryan Morris pitched an inning, giving up a run on a hit. Daniel Moskos pitched a 1-2-3 inning,  striking out a batter.

The Phils had fourteen hits in the game, with Wilson Valdez leading the team with three hits, two singles and a doubles, as he raised his spring average to .417. He was followed by Jimmy Rollins and Ryan Howard, who both had two hits, with Rollins’ hits being a single and a double, and Howard’s being a single and a solo home run, his first of the spring. Freddy Galvis, Placido Polanco, Carlos Rivero, Raul Ibanez, Brandon Moss, Matt Rizzotti and Dane Sardinha had the other seven Phils’ hits, all singles, except for Rizzotti’s double. Rollins and Howard’s two hits help raised their spring batting averages.

The Phils’s Grapefruit League record is now 4-3.
